Dear Minister (oppure “dear President“ , oppure “dear Premier Wen Jiabao“):
I am happy to learn that the death sentence handed down to Tenzin Delek Rinpoche (Chinese: A An Zha Xi) has been commuted. However, I am disturbed that he remains imprisoned and am gravely concerned about his health and that of other Tibetans arrested or disappeared in connection to this case in Lithang, eastern Tibet (Chinese: Sichuan Province).
There appears to be no evidence that Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was involved in the crimes he has been accused of. Rather, circumstances suggest that he is being targeted because of his work to preserve and protect Tibetan culture, religion and the environment. His trial did not follow international standards and he was denied access to a lawyer of his own choosing.
It appears that Tenzin Delek, Lobsang Taphel, and others imprisoned in connection to this case could be being mistreated and tortured in prison. Tashi Puntsok was recently released from prison in terrible medical condition, believed to be the result of torture.
I urge you to ensure that Tenzin Delek and Lobsang Taphel are being well treated, to disclose information about the other men who have disappeared in connection to this case, and to ensure that Tashi Phuntsok is receiving medical attention. Finally, I urge you to immediately release Tenzin Delek Rinpoche from prison.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
